Expressions for forces and torques in molecular simulations using rigid bodies
Expressions for intermolecular forces and torques, derived from pair
potentials between rigid non-spherical units, are presented. The aim is to give
compact and clear expressions, which are easily generalised, and which minimise
the risk of error in writing molecular dynamics simulation programs. It is
anticipated that these expressions will be useful in the simulation of liquid
crystalline systems, and in coarse-grained modelling of macromolecules
CFD investigation of a complete floating offshore wind turbine
This chapter presents numerical computations for floating offshore wind turbines for a machine of 10-MW rated power. The rotors were computed using the Helicopter Multi-Block flow solver of the University of Glasgow that solves the Navier-Stokes equations in integral form using the arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian formulation for time-dependent domains with moving boundaries. Hydrodynamic loads on the support platform were computed using the Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics method. This method is mesh-free, and represents the fluid by a set of discrete particles. The motion of the floating offshore wind turbine is computed using a Multi-Body Dynamic Model of rigid bodies and frictionless joints. Mooring cables are modelled as a set of springs and dampers. All solvers were validated separately before coupling, and the loosely coupled algorithm used is described in detail alongside the obtained results
A Test Set for Molecular Dynamics Algorithms
This article describes a collection of model problems for aiding numerical analysts, code developers and others in the design of computational methods for molecular dynamics (MD) simulation. Common types of calculations and desirable features of algorithms are surveyed, and these are used to guide selection of representative models. By including essential features of certain classes of molecular systems, but otherwise limiting the physical and quantitative details, it is hoped that the test set can help to facilitate cross-disciplinary algorithm and code development efforts
